Position Description
Dean, College of Humanities, Arts & Sciences
Provides leadership to advance an innovative and forward-looking vision, mission and goals of the College of Humanities, Arts & Sciences (CHAS) that anticipates and responds to changes in higher education. Responsible for all aspects of administration of the College; oversight and effective management of budgets and staff that will make the college sustainable; effectively communicates and develops strong collaborative relationships within the college, the University, and the external community that advance student learning and success; advances the College’s central role in the strategic goals of the University; creates and maintains a welcoming and productive environment for faculty, staff and students; collaborates with Enrollment Management, Admissions, and University Relations to lead proactive and strategic recruiting efforts for the College in alignment with the University; oversees hiring, promotion, and evaluation of CHAS faculty; fosters the professional growth and development of all CHAS department heads, directors, and staff; facilitates the integration of appropriate and emerging technology (including AI) in accord with current or future industry standards; works in partnership with the University’s academic leadership; coordinates fundraising efforts in conjunction with the UNI Foundation; and serves on the Deans’ Council. Works collaboratively with the deans of the academic colleges, departmental faculty, and the community to advance an innovative curriculum for students; evaluates current curriculum and builds innovative programs in alignment with accreditation practices, industry trends, educational needs, and workforce demands; and works closely with faculty senates and student leaders to shape the future of CHAS.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: An earned doctorate in a discipline appropriate to the College and a demonstrated record of effective teaching, scholarship and professional activity that would merit appointment with tenure at the rank of full professor within one of the departments in the College; demonstrated successful administrative experience in the following areas: budgetary planning and fiscal management; hiring, evaluation and recruitment of faculty and staff.
Preferred: Experience building and leading faculty and staff in: developing and leading an innovative vision for 21st century curriculum that advances the whole student for success; leading academic and administrative quality improvement initiatives; recruiting and retaining students; offering faculty development opportunities; participatory decision-making; attracting and generating external sources of funding; and working in a shared governance environment.
